Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas

Keeping Portland Llamazing One Carrot Kiss at a Time

Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas is a 501(c)(3) faith-based non-profit organization, which strives to share the love of God through animal-assisted therapy and camelid education among all ages.

Since 2007, our therapy teams have averaged over 300 therapeutic and educational visits each year throughout the Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA area, and have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and adults.

During a typical therapy visit, our animals might take a walk with an adolescent child struggling with difficult issues, or motivate a patient recovering from a stroke to reach farther, or calm a child with autism so that she can focus, and achieve new goals. By offering friendship and warm touch, our llamas and alpacas help alleviate loneliness, lower blood pressure, and reduce stress- their presence can bring a sense of normalcy to institutional settings.

Our beloved “Rojo the Llama” inspired our therapy program, and captured the hearts of countless fans throughout the Portland area, and beyond, during his 17 years of life. Ranked as the #1 “Beyond the Showring” PR Llama in the World”* for most of his career, Rojo traveled off the farm thousands of times for therapy visits and special events during his career and was featured in numerous  publications, including Unlikely Heroes, by best selling author, Jennifer Holland, on the cover of the 2019 Scholastic World Book of Records, and featured on the Nat Geo Wild television show, “Unlikely Animal Friends”, Huffpost Live, CNN’s “Vital Signs”, and was featured in an article about our therapy program in “O, the Oprah Magazine” (April 2015 issue)!  On Nov. 6th, 2019, we sadly lost Rojo from cancer,  just after celebrating his retirement in style at Pioneer Courthouse Square in the heart of Portland with hundreds of his favorite animal and human friends!  Rojo’s legacy lives on, as we continue to serve our community with our other 13 special llamas and alpacas.  We are very blessed by all the love that has been expressed for our animals throughout the Portland area, and around the worldwide internet community.
